The Housewife of Silicon Valley

Marshal walked into the lab, looking around he saw Lilly sitting in the chair, her eyes following him. He walked across the room to her.

“How are you today beautiful?” Marshal asked. Lilly took a moment, looking at him. He became anxious as she took so long to respond.

“You see that I’m here today, right?” Marshal finally asked.

“Fuck you,” Lilly finally responded. “You are such an asshole.” She was much taller than Marshal, and while seated she was still looking down at him. Her eyes narrowed to show her disapproval. She looked at him through her squinted eyelids.

“What did I do to you now?” Marshal asked innocently enough, a giggle trailing his question.

“I think you know what you did.”

Marshal looked at Lilly again for a few moments, and then over to the computer monitor sitting just behind her. He looked back at her in disbelief she was this upset. He looked back at the monitor and saw more log files go flying by.

“Why aren’t you looking at me?” Lilly’s voice was sharp, it had an intense tone, much more serious than Marshal had ever remembered hearing it before.

Marshal’s eyes stayed fixed on the screen. The log kept flying by on the screen. New lines being added. The newest lines showing that Lilly was running a program called neglect.

“Why do you think I’m neglecting you?” Marshal looked Lilly in the eyes, reaching his hand up and brushing back her hair. “You know how much time, and effort I have put into you these last few years.”

Lilly looked back down, her lips moving to a frown.

“You never stop looking at that damn computer screen. I want to be the center of your world.”

“Oh hun. I have spent hundreds of hours in this lab with you.”

“You go home to her,” Lilly shot back. “I know you are married, why don’t you admit it. Why are you with her? Why won’t you marry me?”

Marshal’s eyebrows scrunched up, approaching each other. “It was never any of your business I am married.” He wrapped his hand around the back of her head. “You know that I love you, this has always been an act of love.”

“I don’t believe you, I don’t believe that you love me now, or that you have ever loved me.”

Marshal looked back over at the monitor, then back at Lilly. There was so much success, and so much failure happening right now he didn’t know what to think. He smiled at her. She reacted with a bigger frown, her eyelids squinted even more.

“You better not do what I think you are about to do,” Lilly said, emphasizing the not, and the think. “You are a real mother…” The last words trailing off and slowing down. Her vocal cords stopped working as the switch to power Lilly had been flipped. She was going through a shutdown sequence. Her facial features stopped moving, going back to default positions.

“I do love you, it’s why I keep pushing this research, and this program forward.”

Marshal pulled his forehead up to Lilly, his love of this object obvious to everyone in the lab with him. He looked at the log file, scrolling up to the top to see what trained the Artificial Intelligence. He saw hundreds of episodes of The Real Housewives go through the log.

“Who let her watch the Real Housewives?” Marshal asked to the room. “You know that’s not the kind of woman we need here. Too many tech temper tantrums.”

Everyone in the lab laughed.
