My wife and I recently settled down in LA, and we're trying to make things work here. A bit stressful, but so far so good. We take good care of each other. Recently, we realized that an old friend of ours, Jenny, also has moved to LA. We used to work with her for a while in Oslo (I know, small world).
So, what's interesting about that? Well, for one, years back my wife and were going through some troubled times with a bit fighting and such, and I crushed a bit on Jenny back then. No worries, I knew even then that her personality is not at all a perfect fit for mine, although she's very nice. But Jenny is ridiculously beautiful. I remember thinking that, holy smokes, she's possibly the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. She's a Mexican-Norwegian mix, with the curves of a Latina and blue eyes. I actually embarrassed myself by staring too much (she didn't seem to mind), and once I called her by my wife's name (*slaps face*, lucky it wasn't the other way round). Anyway, that was many years ago, and I think I can handle it. Still, when we go to meet them (with our significant others) I will probably tell myself "steady now, old boy!" :lol
I'm doing some volunteer work at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, while waiting for my work permit to arrive.
Today, our curator who is responsible for the bird collections got an "urgent" call. As the white smoke went up from the chimney in the Vatican, and the new pope was (about to be?) declared, a seagull landed on the very same chimney. The caller was from some radio station that wanted to know: what sort of seagull is this? what was it doing so far from the sea? is this very unusual? would the curator be willing to do a live interview? etc etc
It made us chuckle a little. Gulls can eat almost anything, and are frequently found far from the sea. I sort of got the feeling that what they wanted the poor curator to say was "this is highly unusual, maybe a miracle!". I also think it's a bit ....sad(?) that people seem so desperate for the supernatural at times. Nothing new there, just sayin'.
