Why Playboy is a great magazine

My wife once told a friend of hers that I read Playboy. Her friend responded that if I like pictures of beautiful women maybe I should check out "classier" magazines, such a Maxim. My jaw nearly hit the floor. I once bought Maxim before a flight, and was stuck with reading it or nothing at all. It was pretty bad and almost infantile to be honest. The only reason why someone would think it is "classier" is because the ladies are not nude.

Playboy publishes not only nude photos, but also original fiction by well-known authors (e.g. Arthur C. Clarke, Stephen King) before these are published elsewhere. They have good interviews (Richard Dawkins in the latest issue), and often pretty good advice sections. Despite some feminists' misgivings, they are strongly and often obviously FOR women's rights. Sure, there are often a bit too much silicone for my taste, but the women are frequently less deathly skinny than in women's magazines, and some of the photos are gorgeous. But then, I'm a red-blooded male :lol.

Anyway, sales of all magazines have gone down, and people are not sure if Playboy Magazine will survive Hefner, but this one magazine I actually think deserves to stay on the shelves*. I have tried a number of other men's magazines (and even women's magazines :eyes) and they are hardly ever up to the standards you will find in Playboy. Seriously. No kidding

    Hm. I guess that's it. No, I don't work for Hef :)

I as a woman actually really enjoy Playboy. I get yearly subscriptions to it and have a massive collection starting from the 70's until today. I enjoy the ladies, yes. But I also really enjoy the interviews and stories within.

You can often find me and mine both mulling over and discussing something in there together. :)

I do also get subscriptions to Maxium. As you said, it's not nearly as enjoyable. Less nudity does not make it a more "classy" magazine. If anything the trash that they often feed their readers brings the magazine down quite a few notches.

Hmmm. How much do you want for that collection? :)
It's possible that the issue I picked up of Maxim was especially bad, but I also checked the Norwegian version once and .......well, some of the pics were great, but it felt like the text was made up by a bunch of teenagers (it was probably worse than the English one). Ironically, the Norwegian version of Playboy didn't sell enough, so it disappeared quite quickly while Norwegian Maxim is still going strong. I like to think that it's because Norwegian Playboy readers can read English, but I suspect that people simply have awful taste :lol

Maxim for men is geared towards the stereotypocal "man's man." It's not a "sophisticated" mans mag. It's fart jokes and pranks fodder. I enjoy it for that and when they have stuff on neat toys and such, but it capitalizes on the "fratboy" element for sure.

Yes, I guess a better comparison to Playboy would be GQ. This one comes very close to the format of women's magazines (with page upon page of endless commercials). I just found it a bit boring, but that's me.

I love playboy. There's so much great political, philosophical and current event articles, its almost better then now a days news.

There is a website that you can read every playboy article without having to see the nudes.

As for Maxim, I love that magazine. Its a totally different horse of a different color. Its for young adults and people with humor. They have some really good articles too, though, imo. Everything of theirs is laced with sarcasm which ilove.

I enjoy playboy, but not really for the pics. I read the articles. I know the pics are airbrushed to hell and they don't actually look like that, and I really don't care for the facial features on half of them.

Well, I have seen amateur videos of some of the models being interviewed at cons, and they didn't look much different, so when pictures look 'perfect' it's really mostly makeup and lighting. Sometimes they go overboard with fixing images, but it depends on the model and the photographer. It's true though, that they often go for glamour rather than the most natural look.

I remember one Playmate that got a lot of controversy among the fans because her pics looked over-smoothed. I saw some 'raw' pics of her, and she didn't look very different except that she had a few pimples, which is probably what made the photo editors get the (electronic) airbrush out. :lol She's gorgeous though.

The Playboys I've read since I was able to get my hands on them before becoming 18 have been hit or miss for me. I honestly can do without it and I think Maxim is "meh" as in the pics are hit or miss and the articles don't catch my attention. The only magazine I look forward to each month in my mail box are Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, National Geographic, and Motor Trend.

Anyone getting Playboy for the "porn" is a n00b. Playboy isn't really porn, IMO. I'm in the camp of having great dislike for airbrushed models, and honestly I generally don't prefer the types of women they pick for their shoots anyway.

Playboy pictures are more about enjoying the beauty of nude women, although it's also supposed to be hot. They only turn me on if I'm in a horny kind of mood anyway, but the best pics are always beautiful, no matter the mood I'm in:). It's a bit like the pin-up pictures we posted earlier.

I do think magazine sales in general have gone down because of the internet.
But Playboy (the brand) still stays relevant in other ways.
They have a website and cyber girls and of course were quite popular with the show
The Girls Next Door.(BTW I was a big fan of the show, hence the name).

I do also applaud Hef for all his efforts to support women and keep our reproductive rights.
While the magazine itself is highly photoshopped and airbrushed, there is honestly not many media today that is not,so Playboy cannot be the only one to blame for that.

Just thought I should bring up this old thread to advice people that the latest issue (March) of Playboy is smoking hot :D Best I have seen in a while

The Playmate of the month is super cute, the lingerie pictorial is sizzling (though some of the girls are hardly wearing any lingerie:lol), and some of the articles very interesting. Just sayin' :)
