King and Queen Open New Swedish Landmark

At long last Sweden has a new home in America. The shining façade of House of Sweden has created a spectacular new landmark on Washington's waterfront right in the heart of Georgetown.

The official opening festivities for House of Sweden will take place on October 21st – October 23rd when Their Majesties the King and Queen of Sweden will inaugurate the building. The guests of honor will include distinguished members of the United States' and Sweden's governments.

With the K Street location, Sweden has one of the best addresses in Washington, DC. The building on the waterfront is a beacon of openness and transparency. A warm Nordic glow emanates from the backlit glass façade with its patterns of pressed wood - quite extraordinary when viewed from the bridges across the Potomac.

"House of Sweden is much more than an embassy. It is a place for Sweden and Europe to meet America to exchange ideas and promote dialogue. This gives us a great opportunity to carry on public diplomacy and project our modern and dynamic Sweden," said Gunnar Lund, Sweden's Ambassador to the United States.

In celebration of the Inauguration of House of Sweden, local shops, restaurants and art galleries in Georgetown will launch a "Salute to Sweden" weekend on October 20th – October 22nd. Georgetown will be covered in yellow and blue this weekend. The 26 flag poles at the Waterfront will fly both Swedish and American flags. Neighboring restaurants will feature special Swedish menu items, local shops will feature Swedish music and art galleries will showcase Swedish artists.

On Sunday, October 22nd, between 1:00 and 5:00 pm, an outdoor event – The Salute to Sweden Waterfront Festival - will take place in the open area between House of Sweden and the Potomac River. An historic cavalcade of Swedes who traveled by sea to America will connect Sweden with House of Sweden. Well known Swedish performers will participate through song, dance and music.

The crescendo of the Waterfront Festival will be a performance by The Ark, one of Sweden's most famous, and eccentric, rock bands. The performance also kicks off the band's U.S. tour. The festival is free and open to the public.

After the Waterfront Festival, an Inaugural Reception, in the presence of Their Majesties the King and Queen, will take place in House of Sweden for invited distinguished guests.

On Monday, October 23rd, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden’s leading medical university, will host a half day symposium entitled “Innovations of the Mind” at House of Sweden. The Symposium will feature noted leaders and researchers in the fields of neuroscience and mental health. Their Majesties the King and Queen of Sweden will also be in attendance.

The grand finale of the Inauguration will be the Royal Gala Dinner that will take place in Alfred Nobel Hall on Monday, October 23rd. This will be an official dinner with high level representation from the Swedish and U.S. Governments as well as other dignitaries. Prior to the dinner there will be a brief ceremony in the presence of the King and Queen to officially inaugurate House of Sweden.

Sweden's new Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Carl Bildt and the new Minister for Trade, Ms Maria Borelius, will be present at the Inauguration. The two ministers have scheduled several bilateral meetings in connection with the Inauguration.

House of Sweden will then start an 18 month program of exhibitions, seminars, open houses and receptions, at which Swedish experts, designers, politicians, entrepreneurs and students will meet their American counterparts. The first Theme of that 18 month period will be Design and Architecture.

To kick off the fall program of "Sweden on the Potomac", four exhibitions will be open to the public from October 25th:

    • Sweden in Ten Perspectives is an artistic interpretation of Sweden, Swedishness and Swedes. At the same time, it is an artistic introduction to the coming program in House of Sweden.

    • Design S presents contemporary Swedish design at its best and broadest. It includes the nominated entries for the Swedish Design Award 2006.

    • Room for Gotland captures an island of art and design. Gotland, a Swedish island in the Baltic Sea, has distinguished itself as a source of inspiration for innovative Swedish form and design.

    • Sweden in Gold and Silver displays some 90 silver and gold objects on various themes such as hats, walking sticks and bridal crowns, each clearly displaying the artist's humorous touch.

In addition to the exhibitions, IKEA at Home will feature one of the corporate apartments, which will be furnished and decorated by IKEA. The apartment will show how living space, along with the architecture of the building, can add life and character to the modern Swedish home.

House of Sweden will remain open:
Wednesday through Friday from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm,
Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm
    Visitors' entrance: 901 30th Street N.W.(south of K Street N.W.,
next to Washington Harbour in Georgetown)

Factory opening in 2008 to create jobs, and to help supply North American IKEA stores

DANVILLE, VA, October 12, 2006 – Swedwood, the industrial group within IKEA, the world’s leading home furnishings retailer, today announced plans to build a manufacturing facility in Danville, Virginia. The factory will be the Swedish company’s first furniture production location in the United States, and will produce a variety of wood-based IKEA products such as EXPEDIT bookshelves, LACK coffee and side tables, MAGIKER modular entertainment systems and PAX wardrobe frames. Pending permits and construction, the facility will open in early 2008, and will create up to 740 jobs.

The 810,000 square-foot future Swedwood factory will be built on 209 acres in Cane Creek Centre, in the City of Danville, VA – in Pittsylvania County, VA – approximately 50 miles north of Greensboro, NC. “The close proximity to many IKEA stores and distribution centers, coupled with good regional infrastructure and available land, make Danville ideal for this North American production facility,” said Bengt Danielsson, North American president of Swedwood.

Pernille Lopez, North American president of IKEA, added, “Our ability to meet the home furnishing needs of consumers throughout North America with our growing number of stores now will be enhanced by producing well-designed and functional home furnishings here as well. We are proud to be investing in Danville and Pittsylvania County and to be creating up to 740 new jobs too.”

Founded in 1991 by IKEA as a subsidiary to safeguard itself against the loss of vital suppliers in Europe, Swedwood is an industrial group of companies whose primary function is to manufacture and distribute furniture. Originally tasked to participate, when necessary, in the privatization of IKEA suppliers, Swedwood today has evolved into an IKEA supplier with advanced production facilities of its own, including more than 36 production units in nine countries, and a staff of more than 13,000. (In addition to Swedwood, there are 1,300 suppliers in 54 countries to IKEA globally.)

There currently are more than 235 IKEA stores in 34 countries, including 28 in the U.S. and 11 in Canada. IKEA plans to open approximately three to five stores a year in North America, with U.S. stores being planned in: Brooklyn, NY; Draper, UT; Dublin, CA; Orlando, FL; Portland, OR; Round Rock, TX; Somerville, MA; Sunrise, FL; and West Chester, OH. IKEA also has seven distribution centers in North America, with facilities in: Bristol, PA; Brossard, QC; Perryville, MD; Tejon, CA; Vancouver, BC; and Westampton, NJ. A Southeastern terminal is being built in Savannah, GA.

Since its 1943 founding in Sweden, IKEA has offered a wide range of home furnishings and accessories of good design and function, at low prices so the majority of the people can afford them. IKEA has been ranked in FORTUNE’s annual “100 Best Companies to Work For” List (two years in a row), Working Mother magazine’s annual list of “100 Best Companies for Working Mothers” (four years in a row) and Training magazine’s annual “Top 100” ranking of companies that excel at human capital development (four years in a row). IKEA is recognized as a socially responsible company that incorporates environmentally friendly efforts into day-to-day business and continuously supports initiatives that benefit causes such as children and the environment.
