I was wondering, do people always care for the lyrics? Are you sometimes put off a song, because you disagree with the lyrics?

Yes I always care. The lyrics should match the musical score. Indeed, the lyrics should come first.

If I'm listening to songs in English, I only understand a few words. I have very little idea of what they're saying.

And most songs are produced in English - I find music a great relief, much how some find the escapism of moving pictures.

I've been playing from being a really young boy. I like natural music, but synthesising digital music is something I do a bit of now as it's what people want these days.

Vangelis music is haunting when listened to closely. In a truly special way.

Music is expression.. Of thoughts and emotion... Music can move the listener without words , but more often than not the words convey what the song is saying. So yeah, for me they're very important . It's one of the reasons I get disappointed w country artists. More often than not they're simply singing someone else's words. Which for me kinda takes away from the integrity of the song. This doesn't happen in rock, alternative , indie even metal... The guy on stage pouring his soul out, is actually pouring HIS soul out , not some "songwriters".... But again , I'm probably the only one that feels this way...
And yes, I know that those great stax and Motown era songs that I love so much, were all written by songwriting teams.. So I have an inner conflict .. Lol

I do care because sometimes the lyrics can "ruin" a song for me. There are songs
I like that are not in English, but the passion of the words transcends the language barrier. For example

This version of a classic :

    Malagueña Salerosa

I can't understand Spanish, but I understand the Man in the song is pouring his Heart out to a women.

The music of the song is the most important ingredient of the song, but with that said, yes definitely the words matter, thats what completes the music.

Lyrics are very important to me—generally speaking. Whether or not I like a song is not hinged on the lyrics, though. Some songs have really simple and perhaps silly lyrics, but the song is still great because of the spirit in which it was recorded, or the melody is catchy, or the performance is exceptional, etc., etc. But I've never not liked a song because of the lyrics.

I pretty much know if I am going to like a song or not from who the artist or band is. The lyrics are as lame as the rest of the song in 99% of the music I dislike.

Very much so. If I'm listening to a song that has lyrics, I'm not going to like it if the lyrics are garbage. It's also why I tend to lean more towards people that actually write their own or collaborate with other skilled writers that trust the singer to do it justice, and not the ones that pay a ghost writer a mountain of cash to let them take credit.

All my favorites are my favorites because of the way the lyrics connect to how I'm feeling or what I may be going through at any point in my life, and because of the way the singers recite them.

For me the lyrics don't matter all that much, it is the sound quality of the human voice intertwining with the music that is the essence.
Visually speaking it would be like a good oil painting or water colour; up close out of focus and confusing but by standing looking at the whole one appreciates the magnificence.
Vangelis has always been a favourite but likewise Yanni.
