I just went to open the windows and noticed cigarette butts in my window sills. We do not smoke and there is no way hubby would hide smoking from me. Our son has breathing problems and the smoke could probably kill him. I'm freaking out. We always lock our door. We will be getting cameras. I just don't feel safe now:(

Have you had any trades people in your apartment lately?

That is weird! You should get your locks changed just in case.
Strange though, espcially if you noticed nothing missing in your house. Why would someone break and enter just to smoke?
Have you checked the window sills before? Maybe they were there from the previous owners or something?

I've cleaned out the windows when we moved in because there was butts then. I lysoled and everything. We cannot change our locks because we live in an apartment complex. We are putting in cameras for the next time we leave the apartment. The only people who have keys besides us is management. If they have come in without notifying us it breaks our lease and we will move. They is also no way they could have gotten there without someone coming in. We live on the fourth floor so it's impossible for it to just fly in.

Your landlord hasn't been paying any unannounced visits, has he?

Trip to home depot/lowes is in order. Change the locks out. The first person to complain may be the guilty party. If the landlord complains offer to call the police or local news media about lack of safety at his apartments.
Number 1 is keep you, baby & hubby safe!

Very odd...Have you smelled an odor of smoke? We used to smoke years ago and now I can smell smoke from across the street when the neighbor lady is out front.

She shouldn't be. I'm not going to say anything until I have proof. Hubby smelled the smoke. I can't right now because of a cold. I know our neighbors smoke. It goes all over the hallway and through the vents, hubby doesn't usually smell that. Getting an air purifier tomorrow.

Invest in: Cameras. New locks. Window locks. A .45 or (if you feel like being "super safe") a 12-gauge (kept assembled and loaded and ready for home defense in an easily accessible but child-proof location).

Far more people are killed by their own gun than intruders killed.

I'm a gun-loving American (50% of that American-ness is from my 100% Texan father) - I can't be held accountable for thinking guns are the answer!
That's because many gun owners are irresponsible idiots that don't respect the tool and power at their disposal.

A man after my own heart! (All proper registrations, licensing, permits, and such covered I hope!) Or are you in an "Open Carry" state?

I will never have a gun in my house. I do not like them and I do not want them around my child.

Yes on all accounts. Each jurisdiction can regulate open carry so I have my CCW. I work for an awesome company that allows it at work. I ALWAYS have it with me... if I am dressed.

    I believe in guns.

That being said, I've never heard of someone breaking in to a place and having a smoke let alone "smokes" (multiple butts) before they took off. Frankly, that just doesn't happen. Is it possible they were there from a previous tenant and you're just now noticing them? If that's not a possibility then perhaps hubby had some friends swing by for a visit that he forgot to tell you about?

My husband works third shift and I'm a stay at home mom. He sleeps during the day. The only time I really leave the house is to go to the store which is right next to my apartment building or two blocks away. If we all leave it's for a few hours. We did leave for a weekend for easter.

When we moved in there were butts in the window and I cleaned them out so no there is no way I didn't notice them.

Also our son has a breathing problem. Even if my husband had friends he would never let them smoke in our home. It can be deadly to our child.
