When you live in (well, close to) Washington, DC, you hear about government actions before a lot of other people hear about them. So I have learned that the federal government (in the U.S.) is going to start putting a kind of penalty on porn sites that they're calling a tax. "Sexual advice" sites will be exempt. This means we're going to have to start keeping the adult pics and so on down to a minimum and build up the advice parts of the forums even more.

But I think we should discuss how we're going to oppose this action as a united group. Unless, of course, we don't mind all or most of the adult pics, erotic stories, and so on going away, LOL. Let's discuss this issue in this thread.

What we have here is a so called sin tax. These are usually levied on things that are known to be harmful. If people want to fight it they'll have to demonstrate how they believe it is not harmful.

Governments around the world have always come up with novel taxes.
In the early 1800s in Britain they used to tax the size of windows in houses so poor folks pretty much lived in caves.
It will be interesting if this new sin/porn tax gets up in US because in Australia we would be lynching any pollies coming up with that idea.

I can imagine they'll propose it, but I have major doubts it'll ever pass full/real legislation and become a law - at least on a Federal level.

Doubtful of it happening, even if they did the loopholes would be easy, porn/advice most porn site originate off shores already, so enforcement would be futile and there are too many questions of rather it's constitutional or not. Some lawmaker might propose the bill, but it will fly like a lead balloon. The only way the government can come anywhere close to controlling the internet is total censor, hopefully we the people will never stand for that. Not that our officials wouldn't like to, from the Left as well as the Right. Hopefully we continue to swing more towards a libertarian way of thought.

Whilst I did not get it as a April Fool gag, It did sound a little odd but the rest of the world is never much surprised by American politics.

Bonus Points for making an April Fools joke that actually sounds like something that would happen... Yay for our countries Puritanical basis (that we adamantly refuse to acknowledge)!

What? I was talking about the "porn tax" ... As for you and the new table - are you sure that's not a real thing that is happening? ;)
