As lots of you may know,I ride horses,Im also a poet in a sense as I have written many many poems,This is one of several thousand I have written in my spare time..Im not looking for approval,I just wanted to share

    EXHILARATION

The thrill to ride a racehorse
    Causes great anticiption
To feel the power,to taste success
    Is sheer exhilaration

I dress in silks and jodpurs
To ride a winner I believe
    My heart and passion tested
    With so much to achieve

    In the paddock,They get saddled
Then its time for riders up
    The trainers last instructions
Put my feet in the stirrups

We head out of the paddock
To the track for post parade
For now the times to see
    What foundation has been laid

    I keep him limber,Muscles warm
    I feel his every move
Were heading to the starting gate
    With everything to prove

The toteboard says the time has come
    Get loaded in the gate
The gate crew loads us one by one
    Just seconds let to wait

    I sit astride this steed
Feel the beating of his heart
    His coarsing veins are pulsing
    Just waiting for the start

He lunges out the open doors
    Requiring a clean break
I feel the pressure for the win
Theres a aweful lot at stake

I feel the speed in every step
    The power in his stride
The quaking of his pounding hooves
    The glory of this ride

    To run with such exertion
He needs endurance drive and strength
For the cost is to enormous
To be beaten half a length

    Face formidable opponents
    To undermine and coerce
    To conquer race conditions
So that he can win the purse

Til the outcome of the race
My career is on the line
If he wins or hits the board
It will be my day to shine

    LOVE AND DEVOTION

    While lying on his deathbed
    She no longer could deny
All the happy times they shared
But she had to help him die

    Although they were not married
    There was mutual loyalty
    She treated him with class
He made her feel like royalty

    They'd walk each night together
Through the heat and through the cold
But the days were growing shorter
His health and age were getting old

    They'd spend each night together
    Each night still like paradise
    Catered to his every need
    She never felt the sacrifice

    His sacrifice was greater
    And she truly understood
    He gave her dedication
    A replacement never could

    She'd listen to him snore
Never wake him from his sleep
    Watch him resting peacefully
Because the love she felt was deep

But the time was drawing nearer
It was time to say goodbye
    Just the dreadful awful thought
Of his absence made her cry

    After years of true devotion
He drifted off into a fog
    He will never be forgotten
For he was her faithful dog

    A Cherished Memory

I saw a woman at the beach
All filled with poise and pride
She'd loaded up her ailing mate
To take him for a ride

It seemed that they'd be lovers
    Till Alzheimers made him ill
But she smiled on the boardwalk
    Oozing courage and strong will

He stared of in the distance
As she stopped for ice cream cones
Her heart was soft and comforting
    Instead of filled with stones

    They'd probably been married
    Almost fifty years or so
    They would share another sunset
    Yet,Not many left to go

He must have been very good to her
    It made me realize
For the love that she bestowed on him
Brought tears to both my eyes

She didnt even know I saw
    Her pleasure and her grace
Or the effect it had on me
    While looking at her face

    Too often we hear arguments
    Insults and disrespect
In couples that were once best friends
    Who now display neglect

    Ill keep that cherished memory
    With every vital breath
    And honor love and marriage
    Until my husbands death

All my attempts at poetry look rubbish now after reading these... And I've only ever been semi-decent at haiku, it stops me from getting too bogged down with rhyme schemes, meter, and all that other stuff.

    The Alcoholic's Daughter

    My adult life's patterned
By my childhood -Good and bad
From the monster in the bottle
    That lived inside my dad

    Sometimes it would be happy
    A home filled with delight
But sometimes with the full moon
    A nighttime filled with fright

    The mood was so intense
It was worse then rain and thunder
    Whatever has possessed him
The spell that he was under

    It started with a argument
    Then screaming in the halls
I'd awake at three those mornings
From the pounding on the walls

    He'd hold our family captive
    And threaten my poor mother
    There wasnt a salvation
    for my disrespected mother

We didnt have a friends home
    To ever spend the night
We could not predict the evening
    If things would be alright

    The so-called happy family
    Had to always entertain
How could happy turn to horror
The younger me could not explain

As a child guests would ask me
How I got to be so wise
    If only they had known
What Id witnessed though my eyes

    I became quite perceptive
    I could read the body-language
    The stance,The glaring eyes
I would watch with fear and anguish

    While in his drunken stupor
He exposed me to that rage
    It took away my innocence
    At such a early age

    The dream was not reality
    Be "Daddies" little girl
    Instead I was a victim
    In his drunken twisted world

    Some children follow footsteps
    From their drunken parents lives
While others learn not what to do
    In order to survive

    Forgive is not forget
It doesnt mean it was ok
But for inner peace of mind
Ive progressed well on my way
