I know a handful of you, and I'm sure there are several others, passionate about photography. @Mr_Blue mentioned starting a thread to discuss our geekiness...I mean hobby, profession, whatever it may be. :)

So to start out, what do you shoot? Go to gear? What level would you consider yourself?

Just a hobby for me. Teaching myself as I go. Mostly my kids sports, but would like to do more nature photography as I learn more. I just have a pretty basic camera right now, Nikon D7000 with the kit lens. I'll need to get something faster and good in the low lighting.

    Good idea on the thread!

just a hobby for me as well I'd love to do it as a profession but just don't have the time I shoot mainly landscapes using a 700d canon hopefully upgrade soon (canon all the way @xtacy4). I use decent wide angle glass, lee grad filters and big stopper.

I take a fair few photos, especially with my cell. The camera quality is the most important thing to me ona mobile phone.

Hobby for me as well, but I do lots of portraits. Mainly children, families, and newborns. Still learning. I just upgraded from a crop sensor to a full frame, the Nikon 800e. I have a couple lenses, but 90% of the time I'm using my 50 1.4, love it. I'd like to do more landscapes, that's definitely what interests me most. I recently bought a wide angle lens that Im excited to play with, 24 1.8.

I am a novice at best, but I love my Canon D-SLR...landscapes, architecture, some sports (racing!!!), and would love to eventually complete a coffee-table hardback of old churches, cemeteries, and gravestones.

    Yay! A geek thread!

I shoot with Canon 5D Mark IIIs
My go to lens is a either a Sigma 24mm f/1.4 or a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 - the Art range of lenses are fantastic. Sharper than Canon L in my opinion.

Most of the China photos are Sigma 35mm at f/2

    I also use Canon 50mm f/1.4, Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS, Canon 17-40mm f/4, Canon 100mm f/2.8 IS and Canon 24-105mm f/4 for work.

China and I have a fairly small living room which is where most of the photos here are taken. There's just enough wall to get a clean background for 3/4 length portraits. Very little space so options are limited.
For lighting the photos I use a Canon 580 EXII in a Lastolite Ezbox Softbox with a grid on a Manfrotto 1004BAC stand. A 1/4 CTO gel for warm skin tones. Kicker and background lights are Canon 580EXIIs on cheap ebay stands with little speedlight grids / flags / snoots.
Background colours are just created by gels on a speedlight on the floor pointed at the wall.

I started out doing family / pets / newborns too. I had a Canon 350D and a 50mm f/1.8 - so pretty similar but not as good as your kit. Great combo though!

Hey Longnthick - sounds like great kit for landscapes. I'd like a big stopper too but don't seem to get time to go out and shoot landscapes anymore. What are you hoping to upgrade to?

Hi Macker. The entry level Nikons are great aren't they? I'm Canon but only because I always have been not for brand loyalty. Nikons have the edge on focussing these days.

I'd suggest getting yourself a fast prime like Xtacy's 50mm f/1.4 - it will open up a whole new world of possibilities for you :)

Sounds great! Have you thought of shooting in abandoned mental asylums too?!

I'd love a 5d but they are so expensive here. My big stopper is my favourite bit of gear in my bag I love using it takes a lot of patients though

Sure, they're very expensive. I only really need it for quick focussing and good low light shooting. But the 700D looks easliy good enough for landscapes. Like you say with the right glass 18MP is ample for big landscape prints.

yeah when I got the 700d I was either looking at a 5d with average glass or the 700d with decent glass that's where a lot of people get it wrong I think

Totally agree. People spend far too much on cameras rather than lenses. Cameras as the most disposable items of photography equipment.

    I'm not into photography.

I do like making videos of my dives, though. For that, I have a gopro silver, the one with the back screen.

I use a red filter for blue water, a pink one for green water. I also have macro lenses for critters. But the small stuff demands a lot of light and I don't have those.

I also like to make b movies... lol, I mean bee movies. I love bees. And spiders.
