I'm sure this exists in older posts somewhere - but I didn't feel like digging for and attempting to revive an old thread...

I've been getting caught up more and more recently in debates across the internet relating to the objectification, misrepresentation, and disenfranchisement of women. And when I say "across the internet" that is what I mean - my social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Google+), my other forums of various focus, and via direct email with friends/family. It's even cropped up in the voice/text chat in the online games that I play!

I'm curious to hear the thoughts, feelings, and additional questions people - both Men and Women - have on this topic. I'm surprised it hasn't been brought up here on SF considering all the recent hubbub that seems to be everywhere else.

I want to note ahead of time that I strongly oppose what boils down to misogyny (or the mistreatment of any particular group of people for that matter). If that sounds pandering and sycophantic... it is! I'm covering my own ass, because if I don't say that now then I'll surely say something stupid later and have all the women (and I mean all the women) hunting me down and castrating me (or worse)!

Anyway... Your thoughts on the objectification, misrepresentation, and disenfranchisement of women? (In media, in life, &c)

Thanks for NOT reviving an old thread. I hate when people do that. "Oh, here's a two year old thread on what I want to talk about". "Everyone will just be so interested in reading through 6 pages of old posts from people who probably haven't been here in ages, to get to the current nature of the topic". THANK YOU for NOT doing that.

Objectification of women is just a double standard created by feminists to belittle and condescend men. Before any one starts labeling me a chauvinist, I want to make it perfectly clear that I am 110% for women's rights and equality. That's all a good thing. Feminism is not. It's evil.

I really could get on my soapbox, but in the video included with this post totally explains where I am at with the whole business. She says it much better than I and I think my points are much better understood when there is a woman actually saying it.

    xx

I agree with everything she said in the video.More than a few times women have been offended enough at my glance to loudly say so.They don't like being reminded not to put on display what they don't want men to notice.

There's a difference between objectification and disenfranchisement. I'm not sure they're meaningful in the same discussion, except perhaps to suggest that one could lead to the other. Shall we throw in torture, honor killings, and so on too?

I admit I'm not going to watch a 20-minute video.

I also thought this thread was going to be about objects, if you know what I mean. Object-ify me!

Note to self: more obvious titles and less ambitious discussion topics.

I recognize there is a difference. I may have been overzealous with the number of possible discussions for one thread.
A bit much on the sarcasm, but I'll own that I kinda had it coming.

Honestly I'm surprised that there's been pretty much nothing on this from the women around here. Are you all waiting for us menfolk to say something stupid and ignorant so we can be pounced on? :p

    OK I'll say something stupid.
Women are not equal to men either physically or mentally.
Men are not equal to women either physically or mentally.

WE are DIFFERENT and therefore cannot be equal!!
We can respect each other for our differences but we cannot be equal.

No number of 'buzz words' will make that different - it is a fact.

Well relevant to this site... Don't you think that when a porn video ends with a woman kneeling on the ground while a guy stands over her jerking his cock till he cums on her face objectifies all women?

Yes. It's insulting to all women in my opinion, for what that's worth.

I am turned on by and practice bondage but most bondage porn is absolutely vile. It is hateful to women and has no relation to what I do with my partner.

Your scenario depends entirely on the context of the video. It could be either a good or bad thing.

I think sexism is rising generally but the reason are complex and women are often just as much to blame as men.

Well, I'm generalizing. I'm talking about non bondage situations that are supposed to be straight sex. Too often the context is a couple starting off with oral sex and then fucking in various positions and finally the guy pulling out and they adjust themselves with the woman submissively, kneeling or lying there, eyes closed, mouth open waiting for him to blow his load. At this point she is simply a target. She is totally passive. Given the position she could stroke his cock, but she doesn't. I am certain that the rationale is so that the guys watching can fantasize as they stroke their own cocks.

Feminism and women's rights and equality go hand in hand at least in Western countries. Of course there are extremist within the feminist camp that probably shouldn't be described as feminist as they are mostly preoccupied with hating men but they do not represent Feminism and Feminism certainly isn't "evil".

The long subjugation of women on the other hand was/is. Why is it women still get paid less for doing the same job that men do, on average?

Sometimes I think too much can be read into certain sex acts. There must be a certain realism in analysing them. It is impossible for a women to penetrate a man, at least naturally. That the man can penetrate a woman does not mean objectification or submissiveness it is simply the mechanics of the sex act. Likewise it is not possible to perform oral sex while standing up on an even level, and a man is many times more likely to ejaculate on the woman than a woman on the man. These are just the simple natural facts of sex.

What determines whether the woman is objectified is the tone and context of the video. I watch pornograph but I see far too much pornograph were the woman is a 'victim' not an equal partner who is enjoying the sex as much as the male.

For me, there are two kinds of pornography. The kind where the man basically abuses a woman and there is the kind where both the man and woman are enjoying themselves. The kind were woman are correctly portrayed as sexual beings with a stake in the sex act and not only a hole to be fucked.
