For Puss In Boots...seeing as you've deemed yourself the resident Grammer Dominatrix :lol How much would you charge me to proofread my work? lol j/k.

What's the proper way to type out a plural of an abreviation?
For example, if you're talking about "compact discs" you would type it without an apostrophe. However, I type verbatim interviews (in all caps) which means, when someone says CD, I have to type it C.D., so what do I do to make it plural? It has to be in all caps and have the periods between letters, that's the rule I have to follow.

Would it be C.D.S or C.D.'S?

Hmm..that's a tough grammar question because under normal circumstances I'd pluralize it as CDs, but since it's all caps and you have to type the abbreviations, I think you can probably do whatever you think is best. There's no grammar rule for this I'm afraid. I personally think C.D.'S is the least confusing, but perhaps not as grammatically correct as C.D.S. Rather than a pluralization for compact disc, it looks to me like cee dee ess. Hope this was helpful. :)

    Thanks. :)

I've done it both ways but it just doesn't look right either way. I've never really gotten a straight answer from my supervisor and it's not in my handbook anywhere, so I thought I'd ask. The English language is rough. :shrug

The apostrophe shows ownership or a contraction.

His compact discs were all over the floor. His CDs were ...
The compact disc's label was peeled off. The CD's label ...

    I vote no apostrophe.

Yeah, but I have to put the periods in there and it has to be in all caps, so it would have to be C.D.'S OR C.D.S.

"I BOUGHT THREE C.D.S." or "I BOUGHT THREE C.D.'S." :ugh

Either way it looks weird. In my professional opinion I recommend, "I BOUGHT THREE C.D.'S." While not entirely grammatically correct, it is the least confusing.

I tend to side with Puss_in_boots. It's a tough one to answer, and I was waiting to see what she'd say. As a former editor I consider myself fairly knowledgable about grammar, but this one had me paging through the AP Style Guide for clues.
Since the style you have to follow is a little strange to begin with (all caps and periods after each letter), it's hard to say what's correct. If it's not addressed in your style guide, I'd say there's no "wrong way", so use what's least confusing.

I'd have to agree. If you can't be absolutely correct, it's best to be as clear as possible.
