Yesterday i had to have my best friend put to sleep. Some may think this ridiculous as he was a dog, but i got him in 2004 just before i graduated college, he was almost 4 years old. Jake was 1/2 bull mastiff and 1/2 black lab. Smart as all get out, and more like a brother to me. He is the one who helped me keep my sanity when my kids died, he was there when me and my wife split up for a while, he was there when all the good happened. I never had to leash him as when we went out he would stay by my side, except when he was chasing Amarillos around. He is also the only thing that never ask me for anything or ever took advantage of me. I really wish everyone could have a friend like him. He was almost 16 years old, he had a hell of a good run and he will be missed.

I went through the same thing two months ago. I know how you are feeling. It is a very emotional thing.

I'm totally Sorry Billy, Nothing ridiculous about it, I love my German Shepherd more than most people I know, she has gotten me through some hard times as well. She hit 9 years old this year and time makes me dread that day myself. I've had dogs all my life and have missed them all, but this one will be hard. So I totally understand your grief.:(

Thanks everyone. He dident go alone, he was resting his head on my arms looking at me when he went. He was peaceful and knew he was not alone.

Hugs again. I lost my 13 yo kitty in January. Lost our 11 yo boxer last summer. I agree, there are days I'd rather sit with my four legged family members than the two legged. They always seem to know exactly what we need. We are blessed beyond compare to share their lives but the heartbreak when they must leave.....
There's a page on FB called 'All dogs go to heaven', It makes me cry but it's for sharing your pets story.

My heart is crying for you as I myself am a avid dog lover,Yes they fear nobody when it comes to our protection and they are the best listeners in the world.Never asking for anything and never judging you.Im sure he had a wonderful life with you caring for him,Your heart may be heavy and your sadness great but please remember,There are a million more dogs at shelters hoping to have a forever friend like you..Saying a prayer for you. My deepest condolences xoxo

The loss of a pet is so painful. I fall to pieces everytime I have to put down one of my cats. I'm so sorry to hear about your dog who I'm sure was a much a part of your family as the people in it.

Thank you everyone, and thank you for sharing and relating. They are the best, and sometimes better than the people in our lives.
