I do think CNN is trying to show the country and world
the power they have over politics, wars and everyday lives of
    the citizens.
Poll after poll, 24/7 reporting with so-called experts, first Romney, then O'Bama, on and on, by election day, most people just wanted it over.
One good thing is that more people are beginning to vote, it is
    one of our freedoms.
Starting with Bill Clinton(who is probably the best Pres.) this tune
    says it all.

Ha, know what you mean, but I think the media is tilting
some of today's events to their advantage or to the side
    they are supporting ! !

lol,( really only way to get Don Henley-Dirty Laundry on
    the threads, lol) sb

No, more of the country today is center left, so the left will continue to win as long as they can keep the turnout high. The Tea Party hijacked the republican party, so it scared moderates away from the GOP, where the Democrats modernized to cater to the changing political landscape of new young and hispanic voters.

Here is what I think were the biggest factors:
    Health care: people want Obamacare
Social equality: most Americans think the wealthy should pay more
Racism: the GOP made it very obvious by changing voting rules right before the election in key states, that they were trying to minimize the hispanic vote
Women's rights: only idiots think women have some magic uterus that shuts down in the event of legitimate rape
Gay rights: most people think gays should have the same rights as everyone else, especially the young people
PIPA/SOPA: The young people are not going to let congress censor the internet
Marijuana: most americans think it should be legal in some form
The auto bailout: it revitalized cities that happened to be in battleground states, this was a big push
Elitism: people in both parties saw Romney as way out of touch, and his 47% comment didn't help any
The Tea Party / Bill O'Reilly: these extremists have hijacked the republican party and scared away all of the moderates
Science: evolution is real and man made climate change is not a myth, people are finally accepting both
The Internet: (again) Because communication is now global, americans are more aware of views abroad, and compared to the usa, most countries are very far left, in the world stage, Obama is very right wing.
Socialism: because the GOP tried to use this as a scare tactic to try to associate Obama with the USSR, people actually looked up what it meant and saw that the USSR was the furthest thing from socialism and that real socialist parties are powerful and progressive in other countries.
History: the stigma of Nixon, Reagan, and Bush are hard to get over. Notice that Clinton was very helpful to clinch the election because he's still extremely popular, can't say that about any GOP in a very long time, no GOP president in a long time has left office with a very good approval rating.

So I see it as a large number of issues that the USA used to be split evenly on, but is starting to lean heavily in the direction of progress. If you look throughout recent history, say the past 60 years, the GOP has been wrong about every major issue: women's rights, black rights, gay rights, war, trickle down economics... I think with the internet and the light speed spread of information, the party needs to modernize and stop with the tricks because people are catching on. I think the only thing keeping the GOP even afloat right now is their ability to manipulate religious people, but religion is falling to the wayside among young people now too.
