Well I'm sure everyone has heard at some point or another that having a condom in your wallet will cause it to be prone to breakage. I was wondering if there is any truth to this statement. I mean I would suspect not because the human body is hotter than that will ever be, and I don't think it even moves around when its is a card spot.

I have no 'professional' insight, but most condoms have a nice amount of lubrication, which I feel would help in any "rubbing" effect that walking, etc. would have on the priceless package.

Ummmm, I'd suggest that rather than ALWAYS carrying it around, just putting it in the wallet when you think that perhaps you'll get lucky tonight. :brow

I don't think it's very rough on them.

But I'd rather have one and not need it than need one and not have it.

I keep one in a "secret compartment" in my wallet, and there's no friction with cards or anything else.

Yeah, why would you leave a condom anywhere for 2-4 weeks? The biggest box you can get at most places is 12, that should only last 3 or 4 days :rofl

    Dear Alice,

I have heard that it is unsafe to keep condoms in wallets, since they can get broken or weak with all the bending the wallet does when you sit down. Is that true?

    Dear Reader,

What you've heard is true: a condom stored in a wallet can be deteriorated by lots of action, even when the person carrying it isn't getting any. The constant bending of the wallet caused by sitting and walking, as well as the friction from frequently opening and closing it, can cause a condom stored inside to deteriorate. Even if the condom looks fine when you open it, there might still be microscopic holes and tears in it that make it less effective in preventing pregnancy and the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

My biology teacher a couple years ago said the same thing. No visible damage will be done, but the combination of heat and movement can open miniscule tears that allow seepage.

Rather than carry one in a wallet, stick it in your sock.

The issue is in regard to heat and in particular body heat. Laxtex tends to breakdown fairly easily if it is exposed to moisture or heat. Granted your body temperature is only 98.6 degrees but if you excercise (e.g. running for a train for example) your body temperature rises during the exertion plus you produce a bit of sweat. In regard to condom breaking down due to being in your wallet it has to do with the length of time, the heat from your body along with the moisture wears down the latex or other material make it more suspectable to leaking. In essence it is a probablity and risk factor based on age and what it has been exposed. Now if you bought the condom put it in your wallet and was going to use fairly soon my personal opinion would be you would not having anything to worry about provided you did not do any strenuous excercise. However if you had it in your wallet for a couple of weeks maybe a month I would say it would be risking failure. Rule of thumb is you do not keep it in your wallet unless you know you are going to need it and if you do not use it then it should be discarded thereby minimizing the chance it will fail on you. I realize this may not be the most practical use of condoms nor is it cost effective. However if you are trying to prevent a pregnancy or prevent catching an std then a little cost now is much better then a huge cost later.

But I really do not see where the bending would come from. It is not kept on a crease of the wallet, and I do not sit on my waller. I keep it in the side pocket always.

It's your choice, I'm not going to try and convince you what to do with your condom... if you want to risk it, by all means go for it. I sure as hell don't want to be a dad, I'm way too young for that.

So has anyone here had a condom break on them? I can't say I have.

Used them for a lot of years and never had a problem. Of course they usually stayed in a drawer in the bedroom.

If you keep it in your wallet or in the car sooo long that they look like string cheese when you try to put it on…… you need a new one!
