Statistics indicate the people who engage in receptive anal sex (the one with the ass that gets fucked!) suffer a greatly higher rate of anal cancer than those who don't. Farrah Faucet died of anal cancer. Although I am a sex-crazed scorpio and like to try everything, health is important. Some things should be just once in a while, and with care.

Stands to reason, for the same reason HPV is an STD. Unless we all bath our dicks and receptacles with Betadine, the stats will probably stay that way.

The lesson from a factoid like this isn't doing things less often. It's being informed (which you've helped us with), telling your doctor everything (I'm the princess of TMI with my doctor), and getting screened for things you have risk factors for. Safe sex practices help too, of course, but that's safe sex, not less sex.

I'm really too thick for anal sex (1 in 100 men thick).

My understanding is that receptive anal sex can cause anal muscle damage, so should always be practiced sparingly.

It's only got to take one exposure to HPV to possibly end up with cancer. As the anus is the tail end of the bowel, I wonder how much anal cancer is also caused by poor diet just as bowel cancer is.

    RANT- SKIP IF UNINTERESTED

"Statistics" is something that infuriates me as a person. Like, to my core. I'm going to offer some advise that will serve you extremely well. Over 90% of the statistics you will hear as an American consumer are bullshit. Worthless bullshit. I could write you a 200 page dissertation on the exploitation of correlation vs causation, the statistical alpha and beta level errors, and everything else under the sun (I will if you'd like)... but the real questions you should ask yourself when you hear a statistic like this (or any in America) are :
    1. Who is this statistic coming from?
    2. What are they trying to tell me, (sell me)?
    3. What does the statistic REALLY measure?
... and assume its bullshit from the start.

This statistic most likely comes from someone pushing an agenda of anal abstinence for whatever personal or sociological reason. Now, without reading the specific statistic, I can't tell you whether or not it holds water, but chances are it doesn't.

Let me give you an example.

There is a statistic that I've been seeing on Television lately that makes me want to go to these peoples' office and urinate in a drawer.
"Studies suggest that women who have higher levels of calcium in their diet tend to be healthier and have less body fat." '-So buy our yogurt with calcium in it and you'll have less body fat too!' (is the intended inference).

This is bullcrap. Did you know that studies suggest that women who are healthier also have gym memberships, regularly work out, abstain from eating junk/fast food, get 8 hours of sleep a night, are emotionally well-adjusted, eat healthier food, and have a high enough income to live a mildly leisurely lifestyle? Eating calcium doesn't MAKE you healthier. Healthier people just TEND to eat more calcium. This is a correlation, not a causation.

Statistics are bullshit; otherwise all porn stars would die from the throat cancer caused by fellatio, the anal cancer inevitably caused by anal-sex, the unavoidable HPV and HIV contagions, sepsis caused by all of the bowel trauma and weakened muscles, and they'd all have canes, colostomies, and IV's all by the time they were 30. Do they?

If you want to have anal sex, have anal sex. Be careful when you do it. Don't be overzealous or you actually could cause damage; but what CAN'T you say that about? Exercising your anal muscles can actually STRENGTHEN them (ask some women about their kegel muscles). And take everything you hear from people trying to sell you their products or beliefs with a Block of salt.

Always remember. The #1 killer of Americans is NOT Sexual disease, cancer, private gun-owners, fast food, wild animals, artificial sweeteners, liberals, or the Easter Bunny. It is Heart Disease; stress. It's worrying about what's going to kill you next. Stop worrying, it's going to kill you. Just live your life happily and safely the way you want to and don't worry about all of the pseudo-scientific crap everyone wants to cram down your throat.

I apologize heartily for the response I've just written. It is long and I didn't mean to hijack the thread, but this in particular really gets to me sometimes.

    ~Steve

When I read the OP, I was concerned about the source too. But about three minutes of checking confirmed it, sadly. Even the National Cancer Institute accepts the connection.

The price of knowledge is vigilance. If someone throws around a statistic, it's our own responsibility to check it out to our own satisfaction. Or call the public library. If the statistic turns out to be true, you can still wonder about the person's agenda, but at least you've gotten some information that you might find helpful for your own reasons.

The definition of a conservative is something like being aghast that someone, somewhere, might just be having some genuine pleasure. So Steve's right; there are many pushing anti-pleasure agendas: be they supression of vaginal intercourse, supression of anal intercourse, and many more besides. Indeed, the whole ban alcohol followed by ban 'drugs' are inter-related, and both were very much driven by the desire to supress personal pleasures.
