Google and Facebook are considering blacking out their sites on Jan 29th in protest of the internet censorship act SOPA. Will Google, Amazon, And Facebook Black Out The Net? | Fox News Tumblr did is a similar blackout which resulting in 90,000 calls to congress. Should be interesting as Google and Facebook make tumblr look like a mini site. For those of you who aren't techies like me, SOPA will introduce something called DNS filtering. The DNS is how the internet knows that www.sexualforums.com is located at the server 188.8.131.52 and sends your request to Dallas. SOPA will allow the government to tell the DNS to not resolve "sexualforums.com" anymore and reroute to a censored page. China has a similar DNSSEC in place (the industry has nicknamed it "The Great Firewall of China".) The government already has the power to tell DNSs to stop resolving certain domains, however they currently need a court order to do it. SOPA bypasses the courts. There are ways around SOPA of course. I've helped build a workaround with my friends in the hacker community and we are all set up to release it. I hope Facebook doesn't black itself out completely. Tumblr had a way to get back to normal functionality.
