Google and Facebook are considering blacking out their sites on Jan 29th in protest of the internet censorship act SOPA. Will Google, Amazon, And Facebook Black Out The Net? | Fox News

Tumblr did is a similar blackout which resulting in 90,000 calls to congress. Should be interesting as Google and Facebook make tumblr look like a mini site.

For those of you who aren't techies like me, SOPA will introduce something called DNS filtering. The DNS is how the internet knows that www.sexualforums.com is located at the server 208.43.99.61 and sends your request to Dallas. SOPA will allow the government to tell the DNS to not resolve "sexualforums.com" anymore and reroute to a censored page. China has a similar DNSSEC in place (the industry has nicknamed it "The Great Firewall of China".)

The government already has the power to tell DNSs to stop resolving certain domains, however they currently need a court order to do it. SOPA bypasses the courts.

There are ways around SOPA of course. I've helped build a workaround with my friends in the hacker community and we are all set up to release it.

I hope Facebook doesn't black itself out completely. Tumblr had a way to get back to normal functionality.

The answer to being without *Google* = *Bing*.

I could be wrong but alot of people probably prefer google over BING.

And what exactly will all the lil 12yrold girls do with out facebook?
Do u also have a solution for that?

If it does happen I believe that people will make noise about being without these sites/tools. Thats just my opinion though

I think thats a good thing. The blackout I mean. It makes people get off their lazy asses and go do something.

I'm not up to speed on the details of the bill but can't you just use a DNS server in say Europe instead or something? Or do the USA have some magical authority over all the DNS servers in use?

I myself use OpenDNS to bypass the censoring of some DNS sites on Swedish DNS servers and I can now freely do a DNS lookup for sites that are censored in Sweden.

Facebook didn't go it, but Google and Wikipedia are currently blacked out. Wikipedia is completely down and Google has it's logo blackout out as will as spamming search pages with anti-censorship messages :) 100 other smaller websites have also gone dark. I hope it works, it'll be a sad day when the US internet is more restrictive than China's :(

Google never changed over this side of the planet, although Wikipedia has been inaccessable.

Google is up and running, they just blacked out their logo in a "show" of solidarity.

I know that a lot of my comics that I read online have gone dark. Reddit went dark and 4chan also has their backwards way of going dark.

It's been great to see people standing up for what they believe.

I also found out that wordpress is down too. Wow..

Google caches of Wikipedia pages are still working. And Wikipedia in Russian is not blacked out, even here in the U.S.

Russian is my first language. The Russian Wikipedia, however, has a lot of different content from the English Wikipedia. It isn't all just translations of the English content.
