I think it's a question of intimacy. I can't speak for other men, but I have no problem masturbating openly with my partner when for whatever reason she can't participate. I think it's wonderful that a woman can be relaxed enough to have her partner doing that, though of course I'd prefer if she joined in!

I think the fact that he does it right in the bed beside you is great. He is obviously very comfortable with you, or gets off thinking about being caught. He probably does not want to wake you up or disturb your sleep.

For the most part there's an allure to doing something illicit. There was a time when it would piss my wife off, but we ended up having a long talk about it and now she helps.

But again, sometimes there are those nights when you need a good wank to get to sleep and she'd already be passed out and I wouldn't want to disturb her.

Othertimes, it's for something specific I can't get during sex - be that a certian stroke or just the oneness of it. Her libedo isn't as high as mine is and so it helps compensate everything.

Personally, I don't hide it at all. But a friend of mine asked why her husband does that, and my reply is that sometimes masturbation and sex can be two different animals. Hiding it may be his way of not wanting to make his partner feel that he/she isn't wanted. Maybe it's simply an act of release; a chore to be finished. To deny it, though, seems odd to me. But then some people's association with masturbation can be connected to thoughts of needing to hide it, keeping it personal, etc, regardless of whether there's a partner.
