In primitive times, and all of humanity has evolved from primitive (unless you believe in creationism), the sexual power of women was feared by primitive men. Women were considered sexually insatiable, and no one man could ever hope to sexually satisify a woman. When the dots were joined and it was realised that procreation leads to reproduction, men then set out to tame and control female sexual behaviour. And after a few thousand years of this, we have ended up with Western women who take half a lifetime before they break out of their sexual shells.

My other experience is with Asian girls, who have a different religious / cultural background to us. They are typically very sexually confident and experienced at a young age, like early twenties. I learned some, at the time, hair raising things when I was in Asia in my early twenties, and I learned these things from young women who were my age at the time.

Africa is my other key experience, and here the female gender and sexual behaviour is typically different again. Africans have more taboos than Asia (where anything goes), but beyond those taboos, African women usually get a lot of pleasure and enjoyment out of sex, and usually have extremely high, almost insatiable, sex drives. And this is not only my experience, but intimate discussions with a number of men, African and Western, married to African women. It's like the primitive view of a man couldn't hope to have a higher sex drive than the typical African woman.

So yes, women can be as horny as men, and were once in the West, and are now in other parts of the world.

Women who take until about 40 until they develop horniness is entirely a social construct. Many societies have what is known as initiation, where young adolescents are trained to be adults, and part of this training is about sex. And while my wife grew up in a superficially sophisticated high-rise capital city, she too was initiated by her elders. So I used the present tense, because many parts of the world still have initiation.

Some research is happening at the moment on looking at female testosterone levels, and correlating this to various factors. The aim of this research, and there are two studies from what I can find out, is to find out if testosterone varies from culture to culture, and if this variance can then be mapped back to sex drive. If so, there's a possibly physiological issue to consider, because testosterone is our sex drive hormone. I am involved in part of this research, because the pathology company I work for is doing the testing of a cohort of Australian women, and I am doing some of the liaison work on this.

Sounds interesting, cbrmale.

Like you, I am also of the opinion that female sexuality is still chained and fettered.

I hate to disagree, but I do. There are of course many cultures in Africa and Asia, and I would argue that most of them are less open to female sexuality than the Western culture. Many cultures on both of those continents are horrified by the thought that women have a sexuality at all. This is the reason why many African areas still have female circumcision, at least partially to ensure that the girl will stay a virgin until she marries. The Indian subcontinent is also generally not very positive towards female sexuality (although again there are actually different traditions WITHIN India, my wife is from that area by the way). As for East Asia, I'm sure many women feel more liberated there, but East Asia also has long traditions with women being submissive and inactive (think foot binding for instance). The "sexually insatiable women" myth that you talk about is actually quite popular in some cultures that keep women downtrodden: they use this as an argument for the need to "keep them in their place". What the early Europeans thought about sexuality no-one really knows, but the earliest historical record (mainly from Greece) certainly does not speak of sexual freedom among women, rather the opposite. They may have been freer in the Minoan culture, but that is based on paintings rather than historical record. Primitive tribal groups tend to be more relaxed about sexuality than som fundamentalist religious areas, but less so than say, Western Europe. The tribes of Papua New Guinea used to raid each other for "pigs and women". If you ask me which culture has the most sexually liberated women, I would guess the French (and Quebec perhaps), but that's just my view based on people I know.

Trond,
The sexually insatiable goes back a long way, well before any of the cultures in your posting developed. Primitive cultures which were not discovered until the 18th and 19th Centuries. Indeed, my posting pre-dates any of the cultures you mentioned. Greece and Minoa and so on were recent: humanity evolved over hundreds of thousands of years, and these cultures were only a few thousand years ago. Very recent.

Primitive cultures were a lot more sexually relaxed than you give them credit for, although in many cases they didn't understand the linkage between sex and pregnancy. In Australia, for example, there was polygamy, but a wife could also have sex with any man in her extended family, say a brother or uncle of her husband. In Tahiti, wives would have sex with other men during feasts. In the Trobiand islands, this still happens. In some parts of Africa if a woman wanted to have sex with another lover, this was fine as long as he was from a different village. This also applied to polygamous marriages, which is akin to Australian aboriginals.

By the way, female circumcision is not in 'many' parts of Africa, but a relatively small practice in a very large continent. It is largely confined to the Muslim areas of the continent, although Islam itself encourages sexual pleasure for both men and women, and therefore female circumcision is against the teachings of the Koran. It's actually a reaction against traditional African female sexual behaviour, where wives expected to be allowed to have other lovers. Again, a recent development of men supressing the feminine.

These are all pretty recent cultures. How can you know that the Polynesian or Australian aboriginals live(d) a life which is similar to that of, say, European hunter-gatherers thousands of years ago? You can't. The fact is, very little is known for certain about pre-historic Europe. I'm sorry, but I think your view of what was going on thousands of years ago sounds very romanticized. Primitive cultures were probably extremely different, region from region, and your previous post on "Asians" certainly don't apply to even most of people in Asia.

Most studies show that men are, on average, hornier than women. Men probably always have been. You mentioned polygamy: notice that men with female harems are far more common than women with male harems. This makes biological sense (and a common pattern in a number of mammals), as one man can easily make a lot of women pregnant. We are biological creatures, after all. Sex wouldn't even exist without a biological function. Among the San people of Africa (according to some, the oldest hunter-gatherer culture in existence), men apparently choose when to have sex, even though women are nearly equal in social status:
Survival of the !Kung San people in the Kalahari Desert
This does not mean that the women don't enjoy sex, of course.

If you are studying these topics, I think such objections could be valid ground for further enquiry. Take this as friendly advice from someone who just got his PhD in evolutionary biology, and who has also been interested in ancient cultures since childhood.

I have a degree which includes anthropological psychology, which is where I learned these things. This was the subject matter of my thesis, which is why I know so much about Polynesian and African sex. Many early explorers wrote about what they discovered, before it was changed by Christian missionaries. Yes, it is written. Australian aboriginals are one of the oldest societies on earth, dating back at least 40,000 years, and probably longer. Polynesian society was fratriarchal, which then leads us to the theory of the matriarchy, but that's way off topic for a forum on sex.

I wasn't interested in primitive Europeans, as there was no evidence for my thesis.

My wife is, in fact, African, and the African view of polygamy is that it takes many women to deal with the burden of one man... She is actually the offspring of a polygamous marriage too! So its not exactly a harem (which is actually the female members and children of an Islamic household, and may or many not be polygamous, and generally didn't include concubines). The word harem is derived from the arabic word pronounced 'hareem', or forbidden for unrelated men.
