Thank you for all the pointers, guys. Unfortunately, I seem to have some mental block about anal sex now. We tried again the other night and I was so tense I couldn't even accept a small dildo without pain. I didn't mention this in my initial post but, the a few times we had anal sex (when my husband was able to penetrate) he didn't so slow like I told him to and I got hurt.
