There seems to be nothing that can ruin a family like expectations or unfulfilled promises of money or property. Half of my relatives never talk to each other (even parents and their kids) because of an estate that wasn't settled to their liking. I had to shake my head once - an aunt died and I inherited one chair. My mom was livid that that chair was all I got. I told her that I was even surprised at that. My aunt had given me many pleasant moments when she was alive and the memories were enough.

PIB...I totally understand where you are coming from, and your piss-offed-ness about the broken promise. There's a silver lining in most clouds though...having to do for yourself has obviously made you a very self-reliant woman. And THAT my dear is something you should be quite proud of!
A bit like Dreama, I grew up with a poor family who didn't know how to manage money (and obviously couldn't teach me). I worked my way through college...it only took me 8 short, easy years to get a 5 year degree. (Of course, the benefit to the elongated education period was that I graduated without any student loans.) I had to learn how to properly manage finances for the most part from friends who had been taught well by their family. But, life doesn't give us many freebies (or at least not one's that are worth having), and the hard work and calculated risks I've taken have paid off. My wife and I do fairly well (she grew up with a family that didn't know how to manage money either), we're certainly not what I'd call "wealthy" monetarily, but we're comfortable. We have a modest but quite nice home in a nice area. We've helped her parents and brothers financially many times, and we even bought my parents a small house to live in (we actually paid cash for it, for that matter...not as "impressive" as it sounds, really...real estate is cheap in depressed areas of the country).
So, I know the broken promises really sting...but the self-reliance that you have HAD to develop to compensate will serve you well throughout the rest of your life.

Thanks for your words of encouragement and support, everyone. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one with unreliable relatives, but at the same time it's too bad that we all have that in common. You're right BassDude, that growing up with all those broken promises has made me into a very self-reliant person. Now I hardly ever ask for help with anything from anybody, to the point where if I can't do something without help then I'd rather not do it at all.
Last summer I didn't have much of a choice. I was doing some freelance writing work, and was paid by check for each article I contributed. The checks were sent to my address here in Sweden, and since I can't really do much with American checks here, I had to mail them to my mom in California and have her deposit them into my Wells Fargo bank account. I couldn't have them sent directly to my mom because I had to endorse them first. After they were deposited I could withdraw the funds in Swedish money from any ATM here in Sweden. Thankfully, my mom was always very prompt in getting those checks deposited for me, and usually she'd deposit them the same day they arrived in the mail.
Jeez..CL, I don't know what I'd do if my mom's negligence actually ended getting me arrested. That must have taken some time to get over.

Have you got it yet? Usually if she pays transfers money online to your account it takes longer then if she went to the bank.

Nope, nothing yet. She hasn't responded to the recent email I sent her either.

Dont feel bad i am 19 yrs old and turning 20 in august.
And for the passed 3 years i didnt receive so much as a cake for my b-day and have never had a b-day party.
Also i just graduated from High School this passed year and i sit back and see all my friends getting cars, tons of money, computers, cards...everything you can imagine. And the ONLY thing i recieved was 50 dollars from my uncle and aunt which of course im thankful to THEM.
I mean even my mother since my sister graduated who was 8 years older than me. She spent 1,000 dollars USD on a laptop for her graduation and ever since that my mom has been promising me 1,000 dollars to match what my sister recieved...
And well i havent gotten it nor will i ever get it. She says she doesnt have the money blah blah blah....but my view is she had 8-9 years to save up for it. Infact the only people even at my graduation were my dad and aunt. And i didnt even want to go. But no it was SOOO important to everyone to see me graduate..
Pfft sorry i didnt mean to steal your thread if i did | | |

Looks like your persistence paid off! Glad you have a happy ending here.
Now - just what are you going to do with all that cash?

We had to take drugs and go to Rock Concerts! |
