First time anal for a male.

Just today I purchased a vibrator, and I wanted to know (aside from lube) if there is anything I should be doing/looking out for/using when I try it?

If it's not a particularly small vibrator, you'd really be better off beginning your introduction to anal play with a small plug, or slowly inserting a well-lubed finger or two and just leaving it/them there for a few moments (but maybe you've been doing this, so just ignore what I've said if that's the case). Since we've recently had another thread on this subject, I'll repost a few of things I mentioned there:

What you need to know is that anal sex is a high risk sexual activity, meaning serious damage can occur if certain precautions aren't adhered to. Most people can't nosedive into anal sex, they need to spend some time gently dilating their sphincter muscles... A sex therapist by the name of Jack Morin even suggests inserting your finger into your anus daily to practice relaxing the internal sphincter (which is programmed to automatically tighten if a foreign body tries to penetrate the anus). It's vital that your sphincter muscles are 100% relaxed...there shouldn't be any resistance, and if there is, you should NEVER try to force anything into the anus. You can permanently damage your sphincters this way, and one incident is all it takes.

Most people need to gradually work their way up to a penis-sized object, and it can even take (very rarely) years to get to that point.

Something else to keep in mind is how very fragile rectal tissue is in contrast to vaginal tissue. You want to avoid tearing (the rectum being replete with bacteria, it's easy for infection to occur, and if that happens surgery is often the only way to repair the damage). Use plenty of lube, use a high-quality lube that isn't going to dry up on you, and consider using one that's thicker than normal. I use California Exotic's Original Anal Lube and I love it; it stays nice and slick and is non-sticky. Not to mention, it's pretty cheap compared to some of the other quality lubes around. NEVER use something like Anal-Eze that contains a desensitizing ingredient. You want to know if there's any pain at all, you need to know so you can stop immediately before causing harm to the sphincters or rectum. And that's another caveat: NO pain is acceptable pain when it comes to anal penetration. If there is even the slightest hint, stop what you're doing and wait another day to try again.

I'll also add that you should thrust gently with your vibrator, and don't overdo the anal play. There's some evidence to suggest that regular penetration with a penis-sized object can loosen the anal sphincter muscles over time, so the best way to play it safe is to use objects like a vibrator occasionally to give the sphincters plenty of time to recuperate.

Anal play for beginners

Disclaimer: I am NOT a doctor and I do NOT play one on TV. This is the way *I* learned how to discover anal play. As usual care needs to be practiced. GO VERY SLOWLY.

First start off with a TRIMMED index finger. You may even want to put on a latex glove first to help make it even smoother. Use KY or the drug store brand of KY and lube the finger well. Place it VERY GENTLY near the anus and lightly circle the hole with the finger. DON'T INSERT YET. Just circle it for a few minutes. After a few minutes without insert, just put the finger over the anus and gently press a bit without entering. Just apply a bit of pressure.
Do this over and over a few times and after a few minutes SLOWLY begin to insert JUST THE FINGER *TIP* in about a quarter of an inch then take it out. Do this a few times then go a LITTLE further in. Repeat this until you have you whole finger in. DO NOT FORCE IT, IF HE OR SHE OR YOU SAYS STOP, STOP!

Within a week or so of trying this the person should be fairly used to the finger and inserting and pumping it in and out should become easy. Also try moving the finger around while inserted, back & forth,etc. Orgasms ARE VERY VERY INTENSE when you leave your finger or butt plug or dildo in.

Soon you will want to try something slightly bigger than your finger. Try your middle finger or graduate to a SMALL butt plug. Same rules apply to the new toy as did with the finger. Start off using the finger as usual then after getting loose begin with the plug.
Plugs have flared bottoms to prevent them from going all the way in. If you graduate to dildos later get ones with a flared base or ones that have the balls at the bottom. This prevents them from slipping all the way in. You don't need a trip to the ER to retrieve it, that would SUCK!
After a while you will become very used to anal play and you won't need much time to prep for your session. You'll loosen up very quickly after you learn how to relax your anal muscles. It takes me less than 5 minutes to go from start to riding a 8 inch silicon dildo like a bucking bronco!

One piece of advice I haven't seen mentioned is to push out when you try to insert whatever. If you push out (ummm...best to make sure that you're "empty", if you follow me ), you "uncurl" and loosen the sphincter muscles, and whatever goes in with no pain or resistance. If you don't push out, the sphincter muscles stay curled and tightened (the way they normally are) and it will be uncomfortable and/or painful.
