There is
never a safe time to have unprotected vaginal/anal/oral sex with a partner who's been infected with the Herpes virus (this is another one that's spread via skin-to-skin contact). I have heard stories of monogamous couples having unprotected sex for many years without the uninfected partner contracting the disease, so it does happen. But it's still a game of Russian Roulette. You walk through the grocery store and come into contact with thousands of germs that won't give you any problems, but that only means you got lucky that day. Another day you may come home with a cold or flu virus, or a GI virus. There's always a risk, always.
